Police and Military Chastised in UPR Recommendations

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Deputy Executive Director of Human Rights Working Group Choirul Anam said that at the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) forum in the United Nations Human Rights Council assembly in Geneva, Indonesian Police were not spared the criticism or recommendations from Human Rights Council members.
“A number of states criticized the military and the police because they were involved in human rights violations in Indonesia,” said Choirul from Geneva via the video conference on Thursday, May 24, 2012.
Choirul explained that the Human Rights Council called for reforms of the Indonesian military court system. Human Rights Council members feel that the l egal court mechanisms should be made firmer on military members who violate human rights. “We also demand a revision of the Military Tribunal Law.”
As for the Police, Human Rights Council members think there is need for special training for police. According to Choirul, the Human Rights Council asked the RI Police to undergo a training relating to human rights based on international principles.
“The two recommendations state that the military as well as the police must not defend [those who] in fact violate human rights any more,” said Choirul.
